International Studies

Study Abroad

To study abroad is an integral part of an international studies education since the single best way to improve one’s language skills and to understand foreign cultures better is to experience them firsthand, and for extended periods of time.  Our majors are strongly encouraged to have at least one overseas educational experience.  Study abroad accumulates academic credit and does not increase time to graduation.

International Studies does not organize its own study abroad programs, but works with the Office of International Affairs (OIA) to create and sustain programs suited to the interests and needs of our majors. OIA also administers a variety of competitive grants, including one funded by International Studies itself, to help students offset the costs of studying abroad. With one of the best Study Abroad programs in the nation, you can select to study in over 40 countries to learn languages, cultures, and expand upon diverse academic thought in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, South America, Europe, and Africa.  For some students, a study abroad experience can be a life changing experience by enriching cross-cultural understanding.
