Teaching abroad after graduation is one way to transition to the world of work which benefits not only yourself but others. Service to others makes the world a better place.
Listed on this brochure are links to various teach abroad programs. Some are funded by government agencies (both the U.S. government and the government of the host country), some are non-profit organizations whose mission is to promote cultural diplomacy through the exchange of volunteers. Others are for-profit organizations.
Students should research all opportunities thoroughly. These links are offered as a tool to find teaching abroad opportunities, not an endorsement of these agencies.
Get Experience
The first step in making yourself marketable for teaching English abroad is to get experience. Consider volunteering for one of the agencies below. These agencies pair you with an international or new immigrant in a tutoring role.

Asia Council
You're wondering whether you should go to China and teach and, if you go, how you will grow and change and what benefits you will derive. Time in China will give you the opportunity to teach some bright and dedicated students. Founded in 1977, the Colorado China Council (CCC) is a not-for-profit, non-political, educational outreach organization dedicated to developing programs to deepen the American public's understanding and appreciation of China's history, culture and contemporary life.
Chinese language is not a prerequisite. Please note that we can ONLY accept people into the program who are currently living in North America.
Bridges for Education
Bridges for Education was founded in 1994 in response to the increasing need for educational assistance in Central and Eastern Europe. It is a New York State incorporated, not for profit, educational organization and is approved to receive tax deductible donations under federal code 501 (c)(3). It is not a religious or ethnic organization. All volunteer teachers are recruited without regard to their ethnic, religious or racial backgrounds.
Central European Teaching Program (CETP)
CETP exists to benefit young people in the formerly socialist countries of Central Europe by providing public schools in the region with native-speaking English teachers.
Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)
Work overseas and teach English abroad in Chile, China, South Korea, Spain, or Thailand with CIEE. Change the lives of youself and your students. Connect with local communities in ways no traveler can. In countries all over the world live people with a great desire to learn the English language - and to absorb American culture.

French Ministry Teaching Assistantship
Teach English in France! The French Ministry of Education and the Cultural Services at the Embassy of France offer approximately 1,500 teaching assistant positions in French primary and secondary schools as well as in various French teaching colleges – the "Instituts universitaires de formation des maîtres (IUFM)".
This is a truly unique opportunity for young American citizens to not only gain valuable teaching experience but also spend between 6-9 months in France or in one of its overseas departments ("DOM"). It thus facilitates the mastery of the French language through linguistic immersion while allowing, at the same time, for a privileged insight into contemporary France.

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme invites university graduates from overseas to participate in international exchange and foreign language education throughout Japan. The programme offers university graduates the opportunity to serve in local government organizations as well as public and private primary, junior high and senior high schools. The JET Programme is conducted under the auspices of local governments in Japan in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations.
Peace Corps
The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship.
Princeton in Asia
Mission Statement: “To promote good will and understanding and to facilitate in every way the free interchange of the best ideals in the civilizations of both East and West.” Princeton-in-Asia (PiA) provides transformative, service-oriented experiences for talented graduates and serves the needs of Asia as determined by our Asian partners. Over the last century, the organization has achieved this goal by providing talented young people with various opportunities to live and work in Asia.
PiA's Home Office is located on the Princeton University campus. Princeton-in-Asia is a private, independent, non-profit organization 501(c)(3) Affiliated with Princeton University.
Spain, Ministry of Education, Culture & Language Assistantships
Grantees will work as English language assistant teachers, under the supervision and guidance of a classroom teacher in K-12 schools and Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas (state-run language schools) throughout Spain. Grantees will teach 12 to 16 periods per week. The assistant and the classroom teacher (or the school representatives) may agree upon other activities and responsibilities in which they should be involved, including attending faculty meetings, making class presentations and participating in extra-curricular activities such as workshops, field trips, student exchanges, music and theater performances, or sports events.
United States Department of State
The international schools affiliated with the Department of State are independent, non-government institutions. Since they are not controlled by the U.S. government nor do they operate under any official administrative jurisdictional umbrella, they hire teachers and staff directly, establishing their own qualification standards and application procedures. Salary levels and benefit packages vary from school to school.
Westgate Corporation, Teach in Japan
Westgate Corporation was founded in 1983 to provide English language instruction programs for corporations, residents, and public schools of Gotemba, Shizuoka, Japan. Westgate has since provided English language training for more than thirty major Japanese and international corporations. Westgate Young Learners Program is looking for individuals who are highly motivated to teach in a private elementary/primary school.

World Teach

YMCA Go Global is a voluntary service and capacity building program that places young Americans at YMCAs and community organizations around the world.
