The 21st century has been referred to as the Asian Century in recognition of the multifaceted, rapidly expanding global influence of East Asia and surrounding regions. Drawing on cutting edge research by scholars who are redefining area studies, this course highlights the many ways in which Asia is changing the world and the way in which globalization is changing Asia. Inherently interdisciplinary with a focus on contemporary culture and society, and on a history of the present, the course will bring together perspectives from the humanities, arts and social sciences. Students will learn about a range of topics that illustrate transnational cultural connectivity in "Global Asia," including film, music, social media, popular culture, tourism, art, sports, and religion, among others.
